Australia’s first full hybrid ute is on it’s way.

The Alpha of the pack has officially been named.

In the next step of GWM’s vision of an electric future, the Cannon ute will be released with a Hybrid setup. Designed to be bigger and stronger than the current utes, the Alpha aims to be at the top of the Cannon heirarchy.

On The Outside

According to released specs, the Cannon Alpha’s size is larger than the current utes but smaller than the larger class RAM and Silverado. Up from it’s smaller siblings, the Alpha sits 130mm longer in the wheelbase, is 57mm wider, 38mm taller and 35mm longer.

New to the Cannon range, the tailgate has been redesigned to drop traditionally or swing open with a 60:40 split. This could mean getting things in and out of the tray would be easier.

Under the bonnet

The Alpha with arrive with two different engines. Similar to the Tank 500 is a 2.0L turbo petrol hybrid engine offering 255kW and 648Nm. The diesel has been upgraded to a 2.4l turbo diesel with 135kW and 480Nm. This increase in size and power boosts its towing capacity up to 3,500kgs and will be driven by a 9 speed auto and an on-demand 4WD system.

On The Inside

GWM is known for fitting state of the art technology in all it’s vehicles and the Alpha does not miss out. There is a 14.6 inch touchscreen infotainment system which perfectly displays the 360 camera view and clear chassis view. There’s also a large fully digital 12.3 inch instument cluster that will clearly show all the essential guages, alerts and safety systems.

The grades have not yet been announced by expect it to be similar to the Tank 500 where luxury will be paramount. We expect to see heated and cooled leather seats, possibly upholstered in Nappa leather with possibly a massaging system. Infinity premium audio could also be included with up to 10 speakers in addition to seperate climate controls and charging ports for rear passengers. Electric Sunroof will be available as seen in photos and a sliding rear window which is unsure to be electric or manual at this stage.

Safety and Warranty

GWM is committed to safety and has made most of it’s safety systems standard across the full range of vehicles in it’s garage. This includes forward collission alert and mitigation, lane departure warning with lane keep assist and blind spot warning. Full details will be available closer to release date but by comparison if you can find it on another GWM model then it should be available with the Alpha.

Warranty is the same across the range with 7 years and unlimited kms coupled with 5 years of Capped price servicing and roadside assistance.

Availability

External colours are still to be confimed as well as the grades available. Pricing is also unknown but the current Cannon XSR is currently on sale at $49,990 driveaway in Victoria so expect it to be a higher than that.
